Paper-Sculpting a Furry Puppy Dog

This puppy dog is the first paper sculpture that I’ve done of a dog. I illustrated black-and-white line drawings of dogs and illustrated many dogs in watercolor and gouache. But this is the first three-dimensional dog I have done in paper sculpture. I still needed to gather a lot of reference material in order to complete the dog.

This puppy, which I titled “Best Friend,” took thousands of snips of paper for his furry coat. Each piece of “fur” is actually a very tiny piece of cut paper. Here is a close-up of this little guy’s face before he was framed. It gives you a good idea of just how three-dimensional he is.

“Best Friend” is all finished and framed up in a custom-made wood shadowbox frame. He will be featured as part of my installation at the Paper Works show at The Mansion at Strathmore in 2020.
